Risk Factors for Glaucoma
Our eye care team knows that taking your health history into account is key when providing the best care for your vision needs. When you visit our office, we take the time to understand your complete medical history in order to provide the best possible care.
Don't be surprised when we review your health conditions and medications at your eye care visit. There are many medications (even vitamins!) and health conditions that affect vision and ocular health that may require specialized eye tests.

By filling out our online check-in forms ahead of time, you can save time and focus on getting the most out of your visit. Don't forget to bring your glasses and contact lenses, along with any old prescriptions or contact lens boxes to help us understand your unique visual needs.
What is Glaucoma?
Our pre-exam is designed to ensure that you get the best possible care at our eye clinic. Our optometric assistant will take you through a series of tests to prepare for the doctor, including distance and near vision, pre-refraction, and a peripheral field screening. We aim to create a comfortable and stress-free experience during your visit. With that in mind, we eliminated the dreaded air puff test from our pre-exam service many years ago.
How is it diagnosed?
Our experienced optometrists perform a thorough refractive evaluation personally, unlike the growing number of web based clinics. This personalized interaction ensures the best results. Our doctors can use their expertise in combination with your refractive history and responses to determine the best prescription for your eyewear needs.
Not only do they take into account the unique visual demands of your lifestyle, but they can pair your results with your eye health to make sure that all of your visual concerns are addressed.

We understand that some patients may have difficulty responding to the test, but rest assured that our team will work with you to find the best solution for your vision.
Don't hesitate to schedule exams for children or non-verbal members of your family- our doctors are able to objectively determine if they require refractive correction.
Is there treatment?
Binocularity allows our eyes to see comfortably and clearly, it refers to how both eyes line up and work together. This function is quite complex, involving a pathway of muscles and nerves from the moment light enters your eye all the way to visual processing in your brain.
Misalignment can cause symptoms like eye fatigue, difficulty with computer or near work, eye strain, double vision or headaches during visual work. Your eye doctor may perform specific tests beyond the eye chart in order to evaluate your binocularity.

It is important for children to have an comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist who can evaluate them for binocularity. Proper eye alignment is critical to vision and brain development at a young age. Unfortunately, it is rarely tested at school or pediatrician screenings. Learn more about children's vision.
Are you sure? My vision seems fine.
It is commonplace to have your blood pressure measured at each visit with your primary care doctor to screen for any risks to your cardiovascular health. Likewise, your eye pressure needs to be tested routinely to screen for any risks to your vision. It could be the key to detecting potential risks for serious eye conditions such as glaucoma. Our glaucoma certified doctors will review your risk factors with you and create an individualized plan for further testing if needed.
Receiving a consultation from our experienced team will provide you with the peace of mind that you are taking all the necessary steps to maintain your eye health.

If you have a history of high eye pressure or someone in your family that has glaucoma, make sure to schedule your annual visit.
Is there anything I can do?
Our optometry clinic provides a thorough eye exam by using dilation techniques to examine the eye's posterior segment. The use of dilating eye drops provides a complete view of important eye structures such as the optic nerve, retina, and vitreous. These ocular structures inside the eye can be affected by a number of diseases like diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, heart disease, and macular degeneration to name a few.
During the exam, our doctor utilizes a slit lamp microscope and a binocular head mounted light with a special lens.

Dilation is a routine procedure that can help detect ophthalmic conditions, and at our optometry practice, we make it as easy as possible. Our experienced team administers mild drops in office, and the effects typically wear off between 2-6 hours. During that time, patients should be prepared for light sensitivity and blurry near vision and bring sunglasses or use the temporary ones we provide.

Currently, dilation is still considered the gold standard of eye care which is why our optometrists do not replace it with vision screening devices. Speak with your eye care provider to see if you are due for your eye dilation.

Routine posterior segment exams are important to detect both ocular and systemic health issues. There are numerous conditions that can be managed when caught early enough, before they cause vision problems.
